DR. ERNEST LYON
Ernest Lyon was born in Belize, British
Honduras. He came to the United States.
settled in Louisiana and attended New Or-
leans University. After earning the deirrtf
of Master of Arts be entered the Christian
ministry in the Louisiana Conference of the
Methodist Episcopal Church in 1882. Ser-
ving several appointments, including that
of Special Agent for the Freedmen's Aid and
Southern Education Society, he was un-
signed to the pastorate of St Mark's
Church New York City, 1891 Leaving New
York, he was appointed pastor of John
Wesley M. E Church, Baltimore-
In 1903 the was appointed by the late Presi-
dent Theodore Roosevelt, American Min-
ister Resident and Consul-General to Li-
beria- When his term expired in 1911, the
Liberian government requested the Amer-
ican govenment to permit him to serve as
Consul-General of Liberia in the United
States, a position he held until his death.
During his ministerial work in Baltimore
Dr Lyon was ejected delegate to three gen-
eral conferences; helped to effect the elec-
tion of the firm Negro Bishops in the Meth-
odist Episcopal Church Jn 1822 he warant
to Ames Memorial Church Serving this
church for sixteen years he retired from the
active Ministry, April 6, 1938. He died July
17, 1938.
