Communication with the Governor Concerning Negro Handicapped Week
Began Third Sunday in May, 1936. To Be An Annual Affair.

Sir: I am writing this letter to you in the interest of the Association for the Handicapped,
Inc., of Baltimore. They are celebrating: their twenty-fifth anniversary from May 17th to May
22nd. This organization is under the leadership of Mr. Robert W. Coleman, who is also handi-
capped by blindness.

As sponsor of this movement, he has so crystallized public interest until the school board has

erected a magnificent school building for handicapped children at Schroeder and Franklin Streets,

Mr, Coleman is one of the foremost citizens of Maryland. He is a Mason ; he also has the
endorsement of civic and religious leaders of the city and State. Mrs. Marie Bauernschmidt knows
of his work and would. I am sure, tell you much concerning his accomplishments.

The association, therefore, is asking that you issue a proclamation on declaring May 17th to
May 22nd as Negro Handicapped Week through the city and State of Maryland.

I trust you shall see your way clear to grant this favor for this very worthy and commendable
cause.

As I am leaving the city, please direct your communication to Mr. Robert W. Coleman, 1145
Myrtle Avenue.

Attached therewith is a personnel of the Association for the Handicapped, Inc.

Dear Mr. Coteman : Governor Nice received a letter dated April 30th from Willard W. Alien
of Baltimore requesting that the Governor issue a proclamation declaring May 17-22nd aa Negro
Handicapped Week,

Mr. Alien in his letter advises us he is leaving the City and asks that we communicate direct
with you. I, therefore, will thank you to send me a form of Proclamation that you desire issued
in order that I may take the matter up with Governor Nice.
