REV. DR. ERNEST LYON

Rev. Dr. Ernest Lyon, former pastor of John Wesley M. E. Church, for more
a an 12 years, and now pastor of Ames Memorial M. E. Church, comer of Carey
and Baker streets, this city, is one of the leading men of his race, capable by
education, travel and experience. He was for nearly 8 years Minister Resident
and Consul General of the United States to the Republic of Liberia, and now
Liberian Consul General in the United States for the past. 12 years. During
the war period he was, by appointment of Governor Harrington, Chairman of the
Colored Division of the Maryland Council of Defense, and received deserved com-
mendation at the cloge of the war. He is by appointment of Mayor Broening one
of the commissioners to erect the Million Dollar War Memorial in the public
square in front of the City Hall.

Added to his other distinctions, at the last commencement exercises of
Kittrell College the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to confer on him the
honorary degree of Doctoris Divinitates, and Bishop J. Albert Johnson deputed
the Rev. Dr. A. L. Gaines to present the diploma at & function held in his church
in honor of the occasion. Dr. Lyon is known and recognized throughout the
country as one of the foremost advocates of the race.
