THE FIRST COLORED BAPTIST CHURCH

The First Colored Baptist Church was established May 8, 1836 at Thompson and
Young Streets by Rev. Moses Clayton, of Norfolk, Va. In 1860 Rev. Clayton passed to
his reward and was succeeded by Rev. J. Undue, of Philadelphia, Pa., who served a few
months and then entered the Union Army. In the same year Brother Lewis Hicks
became Pastor, and in 1869 Brother Hicks went to Cumberland, Md. In the year of
1872 Rev. J. C. Allen of Ohio became pastor of the Church and served unusually well for
a long time and was beloved by all. After the passing of Rev. J. C. Allen, the Rev. Peter
Carter Neal became pastor, and served very well for a long time.
Dr. Peter Carter Neal died on March 27, 1920, which caused great sorrow in Balti-
more as well as in the Church.
The Church, after much searching, called Rev. Albert Josiah Greene, A. B. of,
Harrisburg, Pa., in 1920. Rev. Albert Greene was trained in Ohio, his native State, in
Washington, D. C., Richmond, Va., Auburn, N. Y., and in Harrisburg, Pa.
Rev. Greene is beccming one of the leading personalities of our beloved city. Hav-
ing recently been elected a member of the Executive Committee of the local N. A. A. C.
P. and a Trustee of the National Training School for Women and Girls, Inc., Lincoln
Heights, Washington, D. C. He is also a member of the World's Sunday Association,
