Board, 17th Provisional Training Regi-
ment, Liberty Loan Campaign and Over-
seas as Corporal "D" Battery 351st
Field Artillery.

The late John Merritt, founder of the
North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance
Co. (with an asset of more than one
million dollars), founder of the Royal
Knights of Kins David, Mechanics &
Farmers Bank, Merritt, Moore &
Spaulding Real Estate Co.. Lincoln
Hospital and a colored library, all of
Durham, N. C.

Mr. Merritt was born in Clinton Co..
N". C., 1850, and died August of 1899,
an honored citizen of his State.

C. M. H. Johnson, General Agent of
the North Carolina Mutual Life Insur-
ance Co. of the Maryland District and
