JOSEPH p, EVANS.
Ill. Evans is serving his seventh year as Grand Master of the
M. W. United Grand Lodge F. & A. Masons of Maryland and juris-
diction. Mr. Evans filled other minor positions in the Grand Lodge
prior to his election as Grand Master. He is also Treasurer-Gen-
eral H. E. of the United Supreme Council Scottish Rite Masons for
the Southern jurisdiction and Deputy for the Valley of Maryland,
Past High Priest of Mt. Zion Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, and is
Generalissimo of Rising Sun Commandery No. 1. Brother Evans
belongs to all departments of the craft, including all the lady de-
partments, and is an all around worker. To show his popularity,
all of the departments tendered him one of the grandest receptions
on Monday night, May 27th, at Sharp Street Memorial M. E.
Church that was ever presented to any man of color in the city's
history. He was presented with a large engrossed set of resolu-
tions, signed by the W. Masters of the forty-four subordinate lodges
in the State, which was handsomely encased in a heavy mahogany
frame that would excite the envy of a Theodore Roosevelt, and
also with a large handsome wardrobe trunk. Over one thousand
people turned out on this intensely hot night to do honor to this
leader and builder of organizations. Mr. Evans is the Supreme
Ruler of the Order of Galilean Fishermen, serving his fourth term.
He is also connected with many other secret organizations. He was
a National Delegate in 1912, and stood by Roosevelt from start to
finish. He is interested in all the movements of his race and the
nation's good.
