MASON A. HAWKINS
Principal Baltimore Colored High School.

Mr. Hawkins was appointed by Governor Harrington as a mem-
ber of The Maryland Council of Defense for the Colored People.
He was appointed by the Chairman of the Defense Council, Head
of the Department on Education for the Council of Defense. This
Department held under the auspices of the State Teachers' Associa-
tion an Educational Mass Meeting at which the United States Com-
missioner of Education, the City and State Superintendents of Ed-
ucation and others emphasized the new values of education and the
patriotic duty of preparedness through education.

Principal Hawkins has infused his patriotic spirit into his school
by promoting school gardens, discovering vocational opportunities
for students and graduates and by responding to the various ap-
peals from all quarters to rally all the people to the support of the
government.
