SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect from and after June 1, 1918.

CHAPTER 75.
AN ACT^to add one new section to Article 77 of Bagby's Anno-
tated Code of the Public General Laws of the State of Mary-
land, to be known as Section 176-a of Article 77, to follow
immediately after Section 176 of said article and under the
sub-title "Miscellaneous, " to provide for the display of the
flag of the United States in the public schools of the State and
for rules and regulations in respect thereto.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That a new section be added to Article 77 of Bagby's
Annotated Code of the Public General Laws of the State of
Maryland, to be known as Section 176-a of Article 77, to follow
immediately after Section 176 of said article and under the sub-
title "Miscellaneous, " to provide for the display of the flag of
the United States in the public schools of the State and for
rules and regulations in respect thereto, to read as follows:
SEC. 176-a. It shall be the duty of the Board of Education
of each and every county in the State of Maryland, and of the
Board of Education for Baltimore City, in the State of Mary-
land, to cause to have displayed a flag of the United States of
America upon every public school building within their re-
spective jurisdictions while said schools are in session, and to
that end shall make all necessary purchase of flags, staffs and
appliances therefor and establish rules and regulations for the
proper custody, care and display of the flag in said schools;
and it shall be the duty of said Boards of Education to pre-
pare for the use of the public schools of the State a programme
providing for the salute to the flag, and such other patriotic
exercises from, time to time as may be deemed by them, to be
expedient, and under such regulations and instruction as may
best meet the various requirements of the different grades in
such schools; all to the end that the love of liberty and de-
mocracy, signified in the devotion of all true and patriotic
Americans to their flag and to their country, shall be instilled
in the hearts and minds of the youth of America.
