CHAPTER 494.
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact with amendments Section 73
of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, title
"Public Education," sub-title "The County Superintendents
of Schools," as said Section was amended by Chapter 506 of
the Acts of 1916, providing that the County Superintendent
of Schools in each County, except Queen Anne's, employing
less than one hundred and twenty-five teachers, shall act as
attendance officers.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 73 of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland, title "Public Education," sub-title "The County
Superintendents of Schools," be and the same is hereby re-
pealed and re-enacted with amendments to read as follows:
Section 73. The County Superintendent of Schools, acting
under the rules and regulations of the County Board of Edu-
cation, shall be responsible for the administration of the office
of the County Superintendent of Schools. He shall nominate,
for appointment by the County Board of Education, all the
professional, clerical, statistical and stenographic assistants of
the office; he shall recommend their removal for immorality,
misconduct in office, incompetency, insubordination or willful
neglect of duty, and he shall see that all regular appointees of
the County Board of Education devote their entire time to
their duties. But the qualifications of all appointments, their
attenure and compensations, except as may hereinafter be pro-
vided, shall be determined by the County Board of Education.
The office of the County Superintendent of Schools shall, be-
ginning with the school year 1916-1917 be provided as follows
with professional, clerical, statistical and stenographic assist-
ants holding office at the time of the enactment of this Sec-
tion shall continue to serve to the end of the terms of which
they were originally appointed, and until their successors qual-
ify unless removed as herein provided; and provided further,
that they shall be paid, beginning with the school year 1916-
1917 on the basis of the salaries herein specified:
(1) In each county employing not less than one hundred
(100) teachers there shall be appointed at least one primary
grade supervisor, who shall receive such compensation as the
County Board of Education shall direct; provided, that no
person shall be eligible for appointment as a supervisor who
does not hold from the Superintendent of Public Education a
