and continue their sessions for such length of time and on such
days as in their judgment the public interests require.

285. There shall be allowed the said judges the sum of five
cents per mile for each mile traveled by them in going to
and returning from the said sessions of the Orphans' Court,
to be paid by the County Commissioners, on the certificate of
the Register of Wills for said county.

286. The judges of said court may appoint a bailiff, who
shall attend each sitting of the court, and perform such duties
as the court and Register of Wills may direct, and shall be
paid quarterly by the County Commissioners, upon the cer-
tificate of the Register of Wills, three dollars per day for each
day he shall be in attendance upon said court.

287. On granting letters testamentary, or of administra-
tion or of collection, by the Orphans' Court of Baltimore
County, a warrant or warrants shall issue under the seal of
office, authorizing two persons of discretion, one of whom shall
be selected by the court, and the other named by the executor,
administrator or collector, neither of whom shall be related
to the deceased, nor interested in the administration, to
appraise the goods, chattels and personal estate of the deceased
known to them or to be shown by the executor, administra-
tor or collector.

288. The County Commissioners are authorized and re-
quired to appoint such number of policemen as they may deem
necessary for the better protection of persons and property in
Baltimore county, one of whom shall have control of said
police force, and shall be designated as marshal; they shall
equip and arm said force, and make such rules and regula-
tions for their proper government and discipline as they may
deem best to promote the efficiency of the same, a copy of
which rules and regulations shall be furnished to each officer,
as well as to the marshal, who shall see that they are strictly
enforced.

289. All appointments hereafter made to the police force of
Baltimore county shall be made from the qualified voters
thereof, and all applications for such appointments shall be
made upon printed blanks, to be furnished free of charge by
the County Commissioners, wherein the applicant shall set
forth in his own handwriting his full name and age, the place
and State of his birth, his occupation for two years preceding
his application, and such other information as the Commission-
ers may require touching the merit and fitness of the applicant,
for the position for which he applies; such application shall
be signed by the applicant, with his affidavit that the facts
