the publication of such laws in three newspapers published in
different sections in said county, the papers designated for
such work to be in the discretion of the County Commissioners,
the total cost of which shall not exceed $600. 00, and no dis-
crimination shall be made by said Commissioners as to the
amount each of the three newspapers so designated shall receive
for such work.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

ARTICLE LXXVII

PUBLIC EDUCATION.

CHAPTER 494.

AN ACT to repeal and, re-enact with amendments section 17o
of chapter 356 of the Acts of 1906, title "Public Education. "

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That section 17o of chapter 356 of the Acts of 1906, be and
the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted with amendments
to read as follows:

17D. The State Superintendent of Public Education, subject
to confirmation by the State Board of Education, shall on or
before the 31st day of July in each year appoint a competent
person to be known as Assistant Superintendent of Public
Education, who shall serve for one year, unless removed as here-
inafter provided, and who shall receive a salary of |2, 000 per
annum, to be paid from the appropriation for public schools,
and shall receive no additional pay for any services said board
may require; the said assistant so appointed shall act for and
in the name of the superintendent in such branches of his office
and field work as shall or may, in the discretion of said super-
intendent, be committed to him; and faithfully and efficiently
perform such duties as may be required of him by either the
superintendent or the State Board of Education; and the said
assistant superintendent shall be subject to removal by the
superintendent, with the approval of the State Board of Educa-
tion, at any time for inefficiency or misconduct in office; pro-
vided, however, that the reason for such dismissal must be
submitted to him in writing.
