stances which shall be submitted to him for examination, and
he shall report in writing the result of his analyses and exami-
nation to the secretary. The chemist shall annually make a
report to the State Board of Health of the work done by him
for the previous year. The chemist shall receive from the Treas-
ury, in monthly payments, an annual salary of two thousand
five hundred dollars ($2, 500. 00) to be paid upon the warrant
of the Comptroller, out of any money in the Treasury not other-
wise appropriated.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 399.

AN ACT to repeal Section 54 of Article 43 of the Code of Pub-
lic General Laws, title "Health, " sub-title "Infectious Dis-
eases, " and to re-enact the same with amendments.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Section 54 of Article 43 of the Code of Public Gen-
eral Laws be and the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted
with amendments so as to read as follows:

54. All questions of doubt concerning the cause or nature
of any sickness believed or suspected to be of an infectious
or contagious character shall be referred to the State Board of
Health, and the said board shall be authorized to employ a com-
petent bacteriologist and assistant bacteriologist and such
other employes as may be necessary to render effective the pro-
visions of this Act; to conduct inquiries into the nature, source
and vehicles of infectious diseases. The services of the bac-
teriologist of the State Board of Health shall be free to all
local boards of health and to all practicing physicians in the
State for such inquiries concerning infectious and contagious
diseases as the said board may from time to«time direct, and
to the State vaccine agent for testing vaccine virus; and the
sum of thirty-five hundred dollars annually, or so much thereof
as may be necessary, shall be paid by the Treasurer of the
State upon the warrant of the Comptroller, at such times and
in such sums as may be authorized by the State Board of Health
upon presentation of the proper vouchers for expenses.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.
