and control all manufacturers of offensive fer-

tilizers or other commodities within the town lim-
its. They shall also have power to provide f or the
codification of all ordinances which may have
been or may hereafter be passed. And for the pur-
pose of carrying out the foregoing powers, and
for the preservation of the cleanliness, health,
peace and good order of the community, and for
the protection of the lives and property of the
citizens, and to suppress, abate or discontinue,
or cause to be suppressed, abated or discontinued,
all nuisances within the corporate and sanitary
limits of said town; they may pass all ordinances
or by-laws from time to time necessary, and they

may affix thereto such reasonable fines and costs,
not exceeding twenty dollars in any case, as may
to them appear right, and in default of the pay-
ment of any fine and cost imposed, they may
provide for the imprisonment of the offender for
a period not exceeding thirty days, or until the
fine be paid, or sentence said offender to hard
labor for a sufficient length of time until said
labor will satisfy the fine and costs.
SEC. 308. The burgess and commissioners shall
have power to compel all turnpike companies

limits of the town to perform all the duties and
obligations imposed upon them by their respec-
tive charters, or by the laws of the State of
Maryland, upon such parts thereof as are within
the limits of the town ; and shall have power to

and repairing of the parts of their respective
roads lying within the corporate limits of the
town.
