LAWS OF MARYLAND.

law, on or before the first day of March then next ensuing, it
shall be the duty of the State's attorney for said county to
bring suit on the bond of said treasurer for said unpaid bal-
ance, which shall be considered as a debt, and at the trial of
the suit against said bond, the said final settlement of accounts,
herein required to be made, shall be sufficient proof of the
amount of liability of said bonds.

Compensa-
tion of
treasurer.

SEC. 235. The said treasurer shall be entitled to receive, as
full compensation for his services as collector of all county
and school taxes, an annual salary of twelve hundred dollars,
for and during his term of office, and until his successor shall
have been duly elected and qualified; and no extra compensa-
tion whatever shall be allowed him, or claimed by him, except
such costs as are hereinbefore specified, or such as may accrue
in the enforcement of the payment of taxes and for assessing
new property, and he shall not be allowed to receive, directly
or indirectly, any other commission or fee from any taxpayer,
nor any levy fee, other than the percentage provided for in
section 232; nor shall he be allowed or claim any fee, com-
pensation or remuneration for posting notices, or for auc-
tioneer's fees or for reporting sales to the court, or for any
appearance fees or counsel fees in said court, in connection
with any such report of sales, or otherwise in the discharge
of the duties of his said office; nor shall he retain or demand
out of the proceeds of any sale made by him as treasurer, any
fees except such as are hereinbefore provided, and the fees
allowed by law to the clerk of the Circuit Court in such cases ;
and if the treasurer, or any clerk, agent or deputy of said
treasurer shall ask, demand or receive any greater costs or fees
than allowed by the provisions of this and the preceding sec-
tions, the person so offending shall be deemed guilty of a
misdemeanor, and upon indictment and conviction thereof
shall pay a fine of not less than one hundred dollars nor more
than five hundred dollars, for each and every offence, one-half

sioners shall allow the treasurer, for the salary of a clerk or
deputy, an additional sum of eight hundred dollars per annum ;
and the said commissioners are authorized and directed to levy
annually an amount sufficient to pay the salaries and fees so
allowed; the said salaries and fees so allowed shall not be re-
tained by the treasurer out of collections made, but shall be
paid him by the clerk by check, as other claims are paid, and
from time to time as such salaries and fees are earned, and in
