LAWS OF MARYLAND.

CHAPTER 454.

AN ACT to add certain additional sections to Article twenty
of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland, title
"Somerset County," under the sub-title "Crimes and Punish-
ments," so as to provide employment at hard labor for cer-
tain classes of prisoners who may be confined in the county
jail, or other persons of Somerset County, under sentence
imposed by the Circuit Court for Somerset County, or any
of the Justices of the Peace for said County, having
criminal jurisdiction.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of

252, 253 and 254, under sub-title "Crimes and Punishments,"
be and the same are hereby added to article twenty of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland, title "Somerset
County," said sections to be and remain a part of the local
law for Somerset county.

SEC. 251. And be it enacted, That in addition to any sen-

tence of confinement in the county jail of Somerset county
which may be imposed in cases of conviction for assault,
drunkenness, disorderly conduct, disturbing the public peace,
vagrancy or petit larceny, where the punishment prescribed by
law shall not exceed one year's imprisonment in the peniten-
tiary or house of correction, by the Circuit Court for Somerset
county, or any justice of the peace for Somerset county having
criminal jurisdiction, said court or justice may, in the discre-
tion of said court or justice, also in said sentence direct that
any prisoner over sixteen years of age who may be convicted
of any of the offences enumerated as above, shall be subject to
perform hard labor for and during the period of his imprison-
ment, on the public roads of Somerset county, or on the public
streets of any incorporated town in said county; provided,
that during the employment of such convict on the public
streets of any incorporated town, the town authorities of such
town so employing such convict shall be charged with the
expense which may attend such employment.

SEC. 252. And be it enacted, That the hard labor provided

vision and direction of the town commissioners and bailiff of
