LAWS OF MARYLAND.

Governor to
designate
police
justice.

designate one of the justices of the peace of the fifth district
of Anne Arundel county, now appointed, as police justice of
fifth district, to hold his office as police justice until his suc-
cessor is duly appointed according to law.

Repeal.
Effective.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That all acts or parts of acts in-
consistent with the provisions of this act, be and the same are
hereby repealed, and that this act shall take effect from the
date of its passage.

Approved April 6th, 1894.

CHAPTER 302.

AN ACT to amend Article twenty seven of the Code of
Public General Laws, title "Crimes and Punishments," sub-
title "Health — Workshops and Factories,'' by adding thereto
four additional sections, to follow Section 149, to be num-
bered Sections 149 A, 149 B, 149 o and 149 D, respectively,
and to be preceded by the heading : "Sweating System."

New sections

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That article 27 of the Code of Public General
Laws, title "Crimes and Punishments," sub-title "Health — Work-
shop and Factories," be and the same hereby is amended by
the addition thereto of the following four sections, to follow
section 149, to be numbered sections 149 A, 149B, 149 C and
149 D, respectively, and to be preceded by the heading:
"Sweating System."

SEC. 145 A. If any individual or body corporate engaged in
the manufacture or sale of clothing or of any other article
whereby disease may be transmitted, shall (knowingly ,) by pur-
chase, contract or otherwise, directly or indirectly, cause or
permit any garments or such other articles as aforesaid to be
manufactured or made up, in whole or in part, or any work to
be done thereupon, within this State, and in place or under cir-
cumstances involving danger to the public health, the said
individual or corporation, upon conviction in any court of
competent jurisdiction, shall be fined not less than ten dollars
or more than one hundred dollars for each garment or other
