portion thereof, or any part of the principal debt, in his discre-
tion, so as best to subserve the interest of the State, and shall
grant discharges to the said parties and their securities, upon
the payment into the treasury of the amount required by him
to be paid in the settlement as aforesaid; provided, however,
that the Governor and Treasurer, for the time being, shall each
approve in writing any such abatement before the same shall be
effective; and provided further, that no discharge or acquit-
tance under this section shall be effective, unless the party or
parties to be benefited by the same shall first pay the attorney
who shall have the case in hand the legal fees and all fees of
clerks or sheriffs.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.

AN ACT to add additional sections to Article two of the
Code of Public Local Laws, title "Anne Arundel County,"
sub-title "Justices of the Peace," to be designated as Sec-
tions one hundred and seventy-one C, one hundred and
seventy-one D, one hundred and seventy-two A and one hun-
dred and seventy-two B, one hundred and seventy-six C, one
hundred and seventy-six D and one hundred and seventy-
eight D.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That additional sections be added to article two of
the Code of Public Local Laws, title "Anne Arundel County,"
sub-title "Justices of the Peace," to be designated as sections
171 C, 171 D, 172 A, 17 2 B, 176 C, 176 D and 178 D, to read as
follows :

171 C. It shall be the duty of the Governor, when making
the appointments of justices of the peace for the fifth district
of Anne Arundel county, to designate one of the justices so
appointed as police justice of the fifth district, who shall be a
resident of the town of Brooklyn or of South Baltimore, who,
before he acts as such, shall give bond to the State of Mary-
land in the penalty of one thousand dollars, with a surety or
