Penalty.

section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon
conviction thereof, shall be subject to a fine not exceeding five
hundred dollars, one-half to go to the informer, or imprison-
ment in jail for a period of not less than six months nor more
than one year.

Effective.
|
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this act shall take
effect from the date of its passage, but nothing herein con-
tained shall apply to or affect any civil or criminal proceedings
actually pending at the date aforesaid.

CHAPTER 233.
AN ACT to appropriate a sum of money to compensate
Sidney I. Wailes for services rendered by him in the refund
by the United States of the quota of the direct tax levied in
pursuance of the Act of Congress, approved August 5th,
1861.

To pay claim.
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the Comptroller of the Treasury be and he
is hereby directed to draw his warrant or warrants upon the
treasurer for the sum of twenty thousand dollars, in favor of
Sidney I. Wailes, in compensation for effective services ren-
dered by him in securing the refund by the United States of
the sum of $371,299.93, that being the quota of this State for
the direct tax paid by the State of Maryland in pursuance of
the Act of Congress, approved August 5, 1861; provided,
however, that the sum of twenty thousand dollars hereby
appropriated, is paid by the State and received and accepted
by the said Sidney I. Wailes upon the express agreement and
condition that the same shall be in full payment, discharge and
satisfaction of all claims and demands whatsoever of the said
Sidney I. Wailes against the State for compensation for ser-
vices claimed to have been rendered by him under the act of
1878, chapter 224, in connection with the recovery and pay-
ment of the direct tax by the United States under the Act of
Congress, approved March 2, 1891.

Effective.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take effect
from the date of its passage.
