CHAP. 809

Acts of Assembly in such case made and provided, the follow-
ing sums, or so much thereof as may be necessary, are appro-
priated : for the contingent and necessary expenses of the
adjutant general's office, including the sum of two thousand
dollars as the salary of the adjutant general of the State,
and for the maintenance, equipment and discipline of
the land force of the militia, duly organized as prescribed
by said Acts of Assembly, the sum of sixty thousand dol-
lars ; for the maintainance, equipment and discipline of the
first naval battalion, duly organized as prescribed by said
Acts of Assembly, the sum of ten thousand dollars.

For the payment of pension granted by Act of the Gen-

eral Assembly to William Brown during his natural life, in
accordance with the provisions of Chapter 269 of 1870,
eighty dollars.
Schools.

For the system of free public schools (white and colored)
in the several counties and the city of Baltimore, and for the

State normal schools, the State board of education, superin-
tendent public education and the clerk to State board of
education, to be apportioned by the Comptroller in accord-
ance with the laws in such case made and provided and the
directions herein given, one and one-quarter million dollars,
or whatever sum may be paid into the treasury on account
of the tax for public schools ; also such other sum or sums
as may be received to the credit of the free school fund from
the interest on stocks standing to the credit of said fund, or
from other sources ; also the sum of thirty-four thousand
and sixty-nine dollars and thirty-six cents, to be paid out of
any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, and
to be placed to the credit of the free school fund, in accord-
ance with the provisions of the Act of the December session,
1839, Chapter 33, and substituted for the interest on the
surplus revenue, as provided in said Act ; provided, that the
sum of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars of the receipts
from the public school tax shall be distributed and paid, on
warrant of Comptroller, for the purchase of text books, as
provided in Section 67 of Article 77 of the Code of Public
General Laws of 1904, and all Acts or parts of Acts
inconsistent with the provisions of this Act are hereby
