ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 35

LIBRARY

Over a period of ten years, we added an average of 120 titles
annually. In 1966, we accessioned 158 titles, and in 1968, 160 titles.
Our figure for the 1969 fiscal year, 154 titles, is somewhat greater than
our ten-year average although slightly less than the two previous years.
At the same time it indicates the possibilities of raising the average
number of titles received to a much higher figure.

Our acquisitions include many items we have been receiving for
some years. These also are new and welcomed additions to our library
which now consists of nearly 8,400 volumes, pamphlets, and brochures.

As has been customary, we added many genealogical volumes.
These included the Barrickman, Hampton, Heath, Emison, Essex,
Mattingly, Mudd, Ligon, Shields, Slagle, and Stringer families. The
Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
added to its series of aids to genealogical research in various English
Probate Jurisdictions prior to 1858. The Cresap Chapter, D.A.R. of
Cumberland presented an invaluable compilation of Allegany County
Lutheran Church, Bible, and Cemetery Records.

Other gifts included the following: a history of Severna Park,
compiled by Nelson Molter, Dorothy McGee's, Framers of the Consti-
tution and Harold Manakee's Maryland: A Student's Guide to Local-
ized History.

Our purchases were somewhat greater during the year. These
included Life on the Potomac River, several reprints on Maryland his-
tory, and the new guide to the manuscript collections of the Maryland
Historical Society.

We received only one municipal code during the year together
with a volume of amendments to municipal and county charters.
