28 THIRTY-SECOND ANNUAL REPORT

in Pennsylvania. The lone exception is the Register of St. John's Meth-
odist Episcopal Church of Baltimore County, which dates from 1800 to
1933, and which, incidentally, is the earliest Methodist record received.

By coincidence, many of the items received from private sources
relate in one way or another to Annapolis and its surrounding area.
Through the courtesy of Mr. Charles Bernstein, we made microfilm
copies of a number of rare printed reports of the Mayor and City
Treasurer. Mrs. J. Gordon Fetterman deposited several original patents
and deeds for lands in the Annapolis area, ranging in date from 1701
to 1833, and a letter written and signed by Charles Carroll of Carrollton
in 1808.

Several views of the City and its houses were loaned to us for
copying by Historic Annapolis, Inc. The magazine Dixie presented by
Mrs. Chester Lewis includes an article by Elihu S. Riley on "The Athens
of America" and a biographical sketch of Frank B. Mayer, the well
known artist, who spent part of his life in Annapolis. From Mrs. James
B. Eppes, Jr., we received a number of certificates, commissions and
other documents relating to the Claude family, long prominent in
Annapolis. Incidentally, a picture of the Claude House is included
among the several photographs loaned us for copying by Historic
Annapolis, Inc.

Two volumes of original etchings purchased from Don Swann
include sketches of the Hammond-Harwood, Brice, Chase, Ridout and
other Annapolis houses. By stretching a point, we can even mention the
large collection of Anne Arundel County cemetery records, loaned for
photocopying through the kindness of Mrs. Marshall H. Nelker.
