To add to our difficulties, we sold the Manual to individuals and
agencies not connected with the State government, but we had no way
to know in advance who would want them and how many. It will be
easier next time, for we have prepared a card for each purchaser, and
everyone who received a free copy signed a receipt for it. By the end of
the fiscal year we had sold 678 copies and had received $2,212.50 for
them. It was an ad lib job for the most part, but it worked. However,
we would not want to do it that way again.

I advised you last year that this project, which we are undertaking
in cooperation with the American Historical Association, had been
revived after having long been dormant. I am glad to report now that
the text is in page proof. The editor has not yet finished his introduction
but almost so, and we have begun to prepare the proper-name index. I
have every expectation that the book will appear in fiscal year 1964.

THE RECORDS

Good progress was made on this work also, and we hope that it
will appear in fiscal year 1964, too.
