ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 9

President of The Johns Hopkins University:

DR. MILTON S. EISENHOWER...........................................Baltimore

There were several changes in the membership of the Commission
during the year. Governor Tawes, who has been a member almost
continuously since 1938 when he was first elected Comptroller of the
Treasury, continues as a member but now by virtue of his election to
the governorship. The Archivist is gratified that Mr. Tawes will re-
main a member of the Commission because as the senior member he
has had more experience with its affairs than any of his colleagues.
Moreover, his long service in county and State agencies has given him
extraordinary understanding of the problems of record custodians.
The Archivist is confident too that the single new member, Mr. Gold-
stein, because of his experience in the legislative branch of Maryland
Government and his lifelong interest in local history and records, will
be most helpful to the staff of the Hall of Records as well as to the
Commission.

We shall all regret the loss of Mr. McKeldin whose second term as
Governor ended in January 1959. Throughout his eight years as Chief
Executive of Maryland and a member of the Hall of Records Com-
mission, Mr. McKeldin rarely missed a meeting of the Commission.
Moreover, he was always an interested participant in its affairs. His
long service in government had convinced him of the economy of
proper recordkeeping and his unique enthusiam as a student of Mary-
land and its history led him to offer us every aid at his command—and
this proved to be a great deal.

A meeting of the Hall of Records Commission was held at the Hall
of Records on May 18, 1959. Judge Brune called the meeting to order
at 4 p. m. Other members present were Dr. Weigle, Senator Radcliffe
and Mr. Goldstein.

Following its established procedure, the Hall of Records Com-
mission held an election of officers, this being the first meeting after the
inauguration of a new Governor. Judge Frederick W. Brune was re-
elected Chairman, and Dr. Richard D. Weigle was reelected Vice
Chairman.

The following members of the staff who had received tentative
appointments subsequent to the last meeting of the Commission were
approved as permanent employees: Eunice L. Callahan, Senior
Account Clerk, Frank F. White, Jr., Junior Archivist.
