ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS

acquired by purchase, exchange, subscription, and gift. Our library
now contains about 5,000 titles.

We have continued to hold our purchases to a minimum. We
bought only "useful books"—reference volumes, or those needed to
complete series we already had. These included volume 7 of the
biography of George Washington, begun by the late Douglas Southall
Freeman, Who's Who, The World Almanac, and The Handwriting of
English Documents, by L. C. Hector.

We have also continued to subscribe to professional journals.
These include The American Archivist, William and Mary Quarterly,
Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, The Journal of Southern
History, and Maryland Historical Magazine. We have continued
to receive on an exchange arrangement the publications of other
archival agencies and historical societies.

We have acquired many valuable gifts during the past year. We
acknowledge with special thanks the gifts of The Cemetery Records of
Washington County, with an index, prepared by the Conococheague
Chapter, D. A.R.; Christopher Gist of Maryland and Some of His Descend-
ants, from the author, Jean Muir Dorsey; The Old Line State, from
Chester A. Porta; The Bethesda Presbyterian Church Records, prepared
by the Chevy Chase Chapter, D.A.R.; and The Atlas of Maryland
and the District of Columbia, from the Honorable George L. Byerly.
We also received microfilm copies of The Tombstone Records of Dor-
chester County, and The Laskowski Papers (an unpublished Dorchester
County history), from the Dorchester County Historical Society, as
well as The Colonial Ancestry of Elizabeth Bordley McGrath, 1842-1926.

The Cemetery Records of Washington County were presented to the
Hall of Records in person by Mrs. Frank Shramek, State Regent of
the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mrs. Irvin C. Brown,
Genealogical Records Chairman, and Mrs. Theodore E. Stacy, Jr.,
State Librarian.
