24 TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT

it has been time consuming to check the contents of a land record book
every time before being able to return it to its correct place on the
shelves. We have decided that without doing violence to the historical
title of the book we could stamp the name of the county on the front
canvas cover thus leaving the spine with its traditional marking.
This year, 432 volumes were identified in this way.

PHOTOCOPYING

The quantity of photocopying has remained approximately the
same for the last several years—this year there was a little less than
last, and a little more than the year before. The amount of micro-
filming decreased by half; this was due to the fact that during the year
before, our photographer was filming the insurance copy of Anne
Arundel County land records. She is no longer available for such work
in the county courthouses because the Archives Division, of which she
is a member, has assumed the task of checking film of the older land
records which are made for us by the staffs of the clerks of court.
Formerly this was a function of records management. In the course
of the year, our photographer checked 234 reels of such film, gave
instruction to county microfilm operators, designated necessary re-
takes and spliced the retakes whenever necessary.

COUNTY LAND RECORDS PROJECT

The members of the Hall of Records Commission will recall, I
am sure, that some years ago all of the land records of Maryland
through the year 1850 were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society
