ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 3 S

LIBRARY ACCESSIONS

Our library consists of a small collection of Marylandiana, genealogical
aids, and archival and state publications. It serves several purposes. First, it
assists the staff in answering inquiries received by mail and by telephone, as
well as those from persons using the search room. It also provides easily avail-
able information for searchers, state officials, and others who use our facilities.
Finally, it functions as a specialized library for local historical groups. The
collection grows through gifts, purchases and exchanges. During the 1957-
1958 fiscal year, we added 121 titles. This compares with the 77 acquired in
1956-1957, and the 141 added in 1955-1956. Our library now consists of
approximately 4,800 items.

Many donors presented welcome materials for our shelves. Mr. William N.
Wilkins continued to supplement his gifts from the files of the Ida-Charles
Wilkins Foundation. Other valuable acquisitions included 200 Years with the
Maryland Gazette, 1727-1927, Baltimore ... A Picture History, and the pub-
lications of the St. Mary's County Historical Society. Other donors included
Miss Martha Sprigg Poole, Mrs. Robert Lee Peabody, T. Stockton Matthews,
the University of Kentucky Library, and The Library of Congress.

We purchased several volumes mainly in connection with the revision of
the Maryland Guide. These included Henry Chandlee Forman's Tidewater
Maryland Architecture and Gardens, and Hugh Morrison's Early American
Architecture. Through exchanges we have continued to receive publications
from The National Archives and the archival institutions of such states as
Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina. We have also acquired reports
from the Ghana, Israel and India Archives.

The following list of acquisitions is printed here in acknowledgment of
these gifts and exchanges, and as a record of what we have purchased during
the year.
