LIBRARY

One of the reviewers of the Twentieth Annual Report suggested that the
list of accessions to our library occupied an amount of printed space far out of
proportion to its importance in the whole picture of the activities of an archi-
val establishment. He was no doubt correct. Our justification for printing the
list again is that, in the first place, it is not so expensive as it seems because its
preparation requires only that the accessions list be alphabetized and sent to
the printer. We feel too that some of the cost is recovered because we do not
otherwise acknowledge gifts of printed materials. Again, such a list acts as a
reminder from year to year that we must restrict the growth of our library;
the printed list compared with those of other years exposes our sins of acquisi-
tion far more clearly than would a typed accessions list; and finally, many of
the items which we list because they are so local and so rare attract the atten-
tion of librarians and bibliographers.

Many of our accessions this year came to us because of our efforts to
collect and make available the early church records of Maryland and because
oi the need to enrich our library of Marylandiana for the new issue of the
Maryland Guide. In the latter group will be found locally-sponsored histories
of old churches, schools, houses and other points of interest. Their quality is
not uniformly high, but in most cases they are the best that can be had.

In the list which follows we have for the first time made an effort to save
space by grouping certain related works, as for example the preliminary inven-
tories issued by the National Archives.
