For searchers who must rely on the mails, the Hall of Records has always
been of help, as a pleasant succession of "fan mail" proves. In 1955, queries
came from the District of Columbia and every state save Idaho, New Hamp-
shire, New Mexico, and Rhode Island. Great Britain, Canada, and Cuba were
also represented.
No genealogical searching is done for such correspondents, since answer-
ing queries by mail is more costly for the Hall of Records than any other
service it performs. Comparsions below show a slight decline in letterwriting.
Fiscal year 1953 .................... 1,293
Fiscal year 1954 .................... 1,318
Fiscal year 1955 .................... 1,287
Because of the name of our agency, we receive many telephone calls from
individuals who assume that we keep all records and that, therefore we can
answer every question. After discounting calls of this kind and those inspired
by radio quiz broadcasts, there remains a substantial number of calls which
demand use of our records or specialized knowledge derived from these records.
During the past year there were 122 calls of this kind.
