binding was never easily learned, and now that there are so few practitioners,
teachers are correspondingly scarce. Binding is perhaps one of those skills
which can be learned through long apprenticeship and not otherwise. Also,
it may be that the binding of large, heavy record books is beyond the
strength of any but the strongest man, one who has from youth developed
the muscles and reflexes which are necessary. In any case, we shall never
have need to bind more than fifty to sixty volumes each year, which is the
full product of our repair room, and if that can be done and still leave the
binder with time for other duties, we shall consider our project successful.

In addition to the volumes which were bound last year and which are
listed here below, there were, of course, many small binding jobs done in our
shop, primarily the maintenance in good repair of our small but growing
library of printed books.
