LIBRARY
It has never been our purpose in the collecting of printed materials to
duplicate items already held by the State Library; however, it would be im-
practical to rely on the State Library for works which are in constant use.
We have, for this reason, found it necessary to provide ourselves with the
important State document series: Acts of Assembly, Journals of the General
Assembly, Reports and Official Opinions of the Attorney General, and so
forth. We have also, as I have pointed out elsewhere in this report, collected
many Annual Reports of State Agencies. Finally, we have begun to enrich
the documents part of our library with single publications of State Agencies
and of the General Assembly. We were fortunate this year in acquiring a
considerable number of such single items, dating from the first half of the
last century. Many of these were printed only in sufficient numbers to supply
the members of the General Assembly, and since they were mainly unbound
and seemed to have only passing interest, they have become extremely rare.
We are especially grateful for gifts of such items.
In addition to documents, our acquisitions of printed materials consist
of exchange items, works of local or regional history, studies in archival
methods and procedures, maps and general reference works which we con-
sider to be indispensible. Wliile the list of accessions given here below is not
a long one as such things go, we feel that it is a good one when it is con-
sidered that our total expenditures for books, maps, journals and manu-
scripts was only $157.
