the Circuit Courts", eliminating certain provisions which can'
not be complied with at the present time and authorizing the
making of microfilm pictures or copies of certain papers filed
with the Clerks of Courts.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That Sections 71 and 72 of Article 17 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1939 Edition), title "Clerks of Courts",
sub-title "Clerks of the Circuit Courts", be and they are hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
71. Every clerk, after he records any deed, mortgage, release
of mortgage, or lease of real estate shall make or have made a
35 mm. micro-film picture or copy of every such record and
transmit said micro-film pictures or copies to the Commissioner
of the Land Office, at the end of each year.
72. Every clerk shall make a 35 mm. micro-film picture or
copy of the general index to the records of any deed, mortgage,
release of mortgage, or lease of real estate when requested by the
Commissioner of the Land Office.
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1949.

CHAPTER 518
Ever since the introduction of the microfilm process, various State,
county and local governmental agencies have introduced separate bills
allowing them to film records, other bills permitting them to destroy records
which had been filmed, and still others authorising the use of such films
as evidence in the courts. The Archivist felt that some order should be
brought to a situation which was becoming chaotic and he asked, therefore,
for a general law modeled after those now in force in Delaware and Ohio.
