32 TWELFTH ANNUAL REPORT
ACCESSIONS FROM PRIVATE SOURCES
During the past year, we received an outstanding collection
of papers from Mrs. Ford K. Brown. Apparently they were ac-
cumulated by Ezekiel F. Chambers, a Judge of the Court of Ap-
peals from 1834 to 1851 and an ancestor of the donor. Many of
them are "Statements and Points" and "Briefs" submitted in
Court of Appeals cases. Some of these are duplicates of papers
found in the records of the Court, but others appear to be
unique. Very likely the papers were used by Judge Chambers in
writing his opinions. Three lists of members of the legislature in
1839, 1844 and 1845 and a letter regarding the prevention of the
absconding of slaves from Maryland to New Jersey, written in
1826, are also of historical interest.
Another large and varied collection came to us from the
estate of the late Peter Hagner Magruder. It included the family
Bible, photocopies of several maps of Annapolis, five albums of
photographs of Annapolis and the Naval Academy, and several
valuable broadsides.
One of the most interesting single items received is a letter
written by Gov. Thomas W. Veazey to a friend describing and la-
menting the conditions in his office after the Council was abol-
ished by the Amendment of 1837. In concluding the letter, he
asked his friend to "burn this as soon as you read it, as it con-
tains matter, not fit to be seen by any one than yourself." Among
other interesting items received are a newspaper account of the
opening of the Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1889 given by
Judge Ogle Marbury and a photocopy of a 1796 map of George-
town presented by Newman F. McGirr.
