ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 25
OPERATION OF THE DISPOSAL ACT
As usual, several groups of records were offered to the Hall
of Records Commission in accordance with the procedure for de-
stroying records established by Chapter 825 of the Acts of 1941.
On September 10, 1946, the Maryland Racing Commission,
facing the loss of its records storeroom in the Maryland Trust
Building, offered the materials stored there to the Hall of Re-
cords. The Archivist replied by telephone that a similar offer
had been made two years ago, and, since the factors which had
caused him to request that the Commission continue to keep the
records had not materially changed, he was forced to refuse the
offer again. (See Tenth Annual Report, pp. 20-21.)
On January 13, 1947, the Unemployment Compensation
Board offered us its records for the calendar year 1941. These
were similar to the records which have been destroyed in previous
years and the Board was authorized, after receiving approval of
the Board of Public Works, to destroy them. The certificate of
destruction is dated June 6, 1947. We also received a certificate
dated January 21, 1947, for the records destroyed by the Board
the year before, but for which no certificate had been previously
filed.
On April 24, 1947, the Commissioners of the State Accident
Fund expressed the wish to destroy some of their records and
asked that a member of the Hall of Records staff be sent to
examine them. After the material had been surveyed and listed,
the Archivist, in a letter dated May 2, 1947, refused the follow-
ing material and recommended that it be destroyed:
Accident Reports and Claims for Compensation, 1924-1937,
90 file drawers.
Canceled Checks, 1924-1938, 55 transfile boxes.
Canceled Insurance Policies, 1914-1937, 5 file drawers.
On May 3, 1947, the Register of Wills for Frederick County
offered us the following materials as a preliminary step to having
them destroyed:
