14 EIGHTH ANNUAL REFDET

NEW ARCHIVAL MATERIALS

New materials from State Agencies were fewer than had been
hoped for. The most important special cause for this state of affairs
was the restriction on travel which made it impossible to move record
volumes except one or two at a time by public conveyance. A steady
flow into our vaults of older records also requires regular propaganda
visits of the Archivist to the various county seats in order to overcome
the reluctance to part with records felt by many local officials. The
shortage of gasoline and tires stopped this effort altogether.

Attention should be called to the Admiralty Court Materials.
Through the efforts of Judge Emory H. Niles, the Hall of Records
now possesses all known extant materials from the early Maryland
Court either in original or photographic form.
