20 SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT

With the assistance of the Historical Records Survey of the WPA
a survey was made of all possible emergency storage space in Western
Maryland. The results of this survey are now filed at the Hall of
Records and have been made available to all owners of cultural objects
both public and private. The Commitee has also prepared four detailed
bulletins for distribution in Maryland: The Care of Art Objects by C.
Morgan Marshal, Director of the Walters Art Gallery; The Care of
Manuscripts by Raphael Semmes, formerly Librarian of the Maryland
Historical Society; The Care of Books by Charles W. Mixer, Librarian
of the United States Naval Academy; and The Care of Public Records
by Morris L. Radoff, Archivist of Maryland. These bulletins have
already been widely distributed and counsel on specific problems has
been given by the Chairman and Secretary.

A generous grant of funds has been made to the Committee by
the Director of Civilian Defense for Maryland but we have availed
ourselves of only a few dollars for postage and stationery. This econ-
omy has been made possible by the grant of a stenographic assistant
by the WPA, the loan of duplicating machines by the Comptroller of
the Treasury and by the contributions of various members of the Com-
mittee itself. There has been no need until now for putting into effect
any of the Committee's plans for the protection of Maryland's cultural
heritage but should the need arise it will be possible to act according
to well-considered plans at a moment's notice.
