26 SIXTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE

RECEPTION AND ARRANGEMENT

During the course of the year it was possible to fumigate, un-
fold, box, arrange, and list all of the materials which came to the
Hall of Records, and this was accomplished in spite of the fact that
more new materials were received than in any previous year of the
Hall's history except the first. In addition we were able to continue
the work of servicing older collections, and we hope that by the end
of the present year our task in this field will be reduced to taking
care of new materials as they come in. Materials which arrive and
are put away in the stacks without the proper attention are of no
good to anyone and produce only an anguished archival conscience.

Several projects involving the handling of loose papers which
had been begun earlier were completed or were substantially
iurthered during the year.

COURT OF APPEALS. The last of the Judgments, about 9,000
papers were put in folders and boxed. The folders are now being
labelled with the names of the parties in the case and the term of
court; about one-third of this task has been completed. In addition,
labelling was begun and completed for the Court of Appeals of the
Eastern Shore. The last of the Miscellaneous Papers of the Court
of Appeals were unfolded and boxed, about 7,000 folders. Boxing
of the Opinions had previously been completed, but many of the
papers lacked docket numbers and dates; by searching the dockets
we have been able to give numbers and dates to about 1,000 of these
papers, and we hope to continue this work until the whole collection
has been labelled and arranged in chronological order.

GENERAL COURT. A collection of Original Deeds of this court
numbering about 1,200 was arranged and boxed.

PROVINCIAL COURT JUDGMENTS. The last of this collection,
1,000 folders, was boxed and arranged temporarily. We are not yet
certain which of these papers belong to the Provincial Court itself
and which ones were sent up with appeals to the Court of Appeals.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY. The Testamentary Papers of the
Orphans' Court of Anne Arundel County were labelled and boxed.
This collection of 12,606 folders, was later indexed.

Most of the collections which were transferred this year re-
quired a certain amount of unfolding, arranging, and boxing, but
none required a great deal of this kind of attention except the col-
