ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 13
Civitan Society of Annapolis about the Preservation of Records in
wartime, and on June 9 he was present at a luncheon of the
Women's Eastern Shore Society of Maryland at Carvel Hall in
Annapolis. An extraordinarily violent blizzard dissipated a meeting
of the Daughters of Colonial Wars at which the Archivist was
scheduled to make an address. Mrs. Krebs spoke on January 9,
1941, to the Woman's Business Club of Annapolis on the general
subject of the preservation of Maryland Records.
There have been a large number of press notices. The Sun
Papers of Baltimore have published several ''features" on various
aspects of our work and the Annapolis Capital has been anxious at
all times to publish anything which might have local interest. There
have been press notices of speeches and demonstrations in the
various localities in which we have gone during the year; and the
transfer of records from a courthouse has, with one exception only,
brought forth favorable comment from the local press. Since the
transfer of records from the county seats to the Hall of Records is
permissive and not mandatory, this kind of publicity is especially
helpful to us.
EMERGENCY RELIEF AGENCIES
The Hall of Records Commission continued to act last year as
State-wide sponsor for the Maryland Historical Records Survey of
the Work Projects Administration. This project was cut after
the beginning of the Federal fiscal year from about 350 workers to
35, and all of the workers in the counties were dismissed. However,
most of the survey work in the local depositories has been com-
pleted, and checking wherever necessary can be done either from
the Baltimore office or from Annapolis. It is confidently expected
that in spite of these cuts the editorial work will go on satisfactorily,
The State Director of the project, Mr. Walter F. Meyer, resigned
and his position is now being filled by Dr. Charles B. Hirschfeld,
formerly State Editor.
