ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS 19

present arrangement would look like a chronological jigsaw puzzle. Photostat

giving date of license, place, and reference. 13,000 cards.
Naturalizations: Card index to naturalizations in the Provincial Court, in
Bacon's Laws and in the General Court of the Eastern Shore 1796 to 1816, giving
name, date and reference. 3,000 cards.
In addition to the preparation of new indexes a good deal of work
was done with cards which had previously been prepared.
During the first four years of the Hall all name index cards, with
the exception of the Marriage references, were placed in one file. The
Archivist felt that with the addition of any large number of cards this
type of general index becomes too complicated. Such a general index
is especially difficult for the earlier periods since there are the problems
of multiple spellings of one name, of family names lacking Christian
names and of the striking repetition of the same names. Since the major
index holdings were of testamentary materials it was decided to separate
these from the others but to add to them in turn any new cards for this
type of material. The remaining cards were divided into Anne Arundel
County materials and Provincial Court materials. All of the new card
indexes mentioned above have been kept separate as well. Perhaps
when the accumulation of cards is greater, other convenient large divi-
sions may suggest themselves, for example, judicial, military, revolu-
tionary, etc.
To the Testamentary Reference index there were added the follow-
ing cards which had been prepared from volume indexes during the last
months of 1938-1939, but had not been made available to the public:
1. Inventories and Accounts 1674-1718: Card index transcribed from volume
index. 12,000 cards.
2. Original Wills 1666-1777: Card index transcribed from volume index,
1,500 cards.
