12 FIFTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE

danger of destruction or dispersal and that their character justified the
sacrifice of funds from other purposes.

In addition to the acquisitions listed below, Mrs. Branford Gist
Lynch presented to the Hall of Records a large number of Gist family
papers which had been on deposit and which were listed in the Annual
Report of 1937-1938. Mrs. Lynch also gave on June 13, 1940 the very
valuable part of this collection which had not been deposited at the Hall.
This entire collection has been listed elsewhere (see "Aids to Research,
Mimeographed".).
