16 FIRST TO FOURTH ANNUAL REPORTS

HALL OF RECORDS COMMISSION

When the Hall of Records Commission met for the first time
its membership was as follows:

Chief Judge, Court of Appeals:

HONORABLE CARROLL T. BOND, Chairman.......Baltimore

Governor:

HONORABLE HARRY W. NICE ................. Annapolis

Comptroller of the Treasury:

HONORABLE WILLIAM S. GORDY, JR.............. Salisbury

President of the St. John's College:

COLONEL AMOS W. W. WOODCOCK..............Annapolis

President of the Maryland Historical Society:

GENERAL CLINTON S. RIGGS .................. Baltimore

President of the Board of the Peabody Institute:

GENERAL LAWRASON RIGGS.................... Baltimore

President of the Johns Hopkins University:

DR. JOSEPH S. AMES ......................... Baltimore

The first change occurred in the same year, when Dr. Isaiah
Bowman succeeded to the presidency of the Johns Hopkins Univer-
sity on the retirement of Dr. Ames. The next change occurred in
1937, when at the meeting of February 15, Dr. J. Hall Pleasants be-
came a member to succeed General Lawrason Riggs who had re-
signed as President of the Board of the Peabody Institute. On July
1, 1937 Colonel Woodcock resigned as President of the St. Johns'
College. He was succeeded by Mr. Stringfellow Barr who thereupon
became a member of the Hall of Records Commission. On Septem-
ber 11, 1938, General Clinton S. Riggs, President of the Maryland
Historical Society, died. Senator George L. Radcliffe became Acting
President at that time and the next year was elected to the Presi-
dency thereby becoming a member of the Hall of Records Commis-
sion.

The Hall of Records was effectively set up by Chapter 18, Acts
of 1935. It was provided that this Act should take effect on the date
of passage March 27. Only two weeks later, April 11, the first meet-
ing was held in the executive offices at Annapolis. Judge Bond was
