the United States, it was natural for the faithful mem-
bers of the Church to hope, that an event so important
in the history of religion, might here be followed with
the same happy consequences as have been produced in

cious delivery from iniquitous laws, and the introduc-
tion of an episcopal government into the Catholic Ameri-
can Church, by raising every where, as much as possible,
places of Catholic worship for the encouragement and
