ship of Pechin and Wilmer, in the publication of the
Eagle of Freedom had been dissolved on August 1 ,
1796,22 it is possible that Wilmer and Hayes were
none other than the Reverend James Jones Wilmer and
John Hayes. No further trace of the proposed Maga-
zine of Knowledge has been found; the attempt to pub-
lish it may well be classified with unrealised ambi-
tions.
Hayes' printing activities were now confined to
blank forms, books and pamphlets. With the exception
of blank forms, all his work from this date seems to
have been authorized by outside individuals and agen-
cies, and would classify today as job printing. For
example, he issued the novel, Marmontel's Shepherdess
of the Alps23 in 1797 for Keatinge's book store, and
the French Cantiques Francais al'Usage du Catechisme
de I'Eglise de Saint-Patrice de Baltimore.24for the
Philadelphia firm of James Rice and Company, which
maintained an important book store in Baltimore.
The surviving products of the Hayes press show
better than those of any other Baltimore printer in
the 1790's, the corporate life of the city. The dif-
