showing the correct dates for the festivals and fasts

of the church year. From the nature of the work, it
seems that these Ordo's were printed before the date
shown on the title-page; hence the Ordo for 1795,
probably the first American edition, was printed in
1794. John Hayes' name (altered to Johanres Hayes)
appears on the imprint of this earliest Ordo,16 and
on the imprints of those for 1801 (printed in 1800)17
and 1802. It is therefore highly probable that the
Ordo's for the intervening years were printed in the
United States, and by Hayes, in Baltimore.18

Hayes had not entirely given up his first Balti-
more publication, the Maryland Gazette, for on Octo-
ber 1, 1794, he proposed to revive it under the name
of the Maryland Register and General Advertiser as
soon as a subscription list of three hundred names
could be obtained. He would

publish this paper three times in each week,
vis. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings,
on a larger scale than heretofore, at the rate
of four dollars per annum.

The paper would include the debates and important
transactions of Congress, foreign news of interest to
the United States, the progress of manufactures and
