lasted until January 26, 1799, at leastl13 ceased at
that date or soon thereafter, Pechin planning a new
daily paper to be called the American.114 But Martin,
instead, brought out the American, and Pechin again
left the newspaper field for a while.

During 1800, Pechin printed two editions of Jef-
ferson's Notes on Virginia115 and Thomas Herty's Digest

of the Laws of the United States.116 In May, he stated
that he would continue "to execute printing in all its
variety, on the most moderate terms", and that he had
"for sale an assortment of printed blanks, of every
kind which can be in demand."117

While he was without a newspaper, he undertook
the printing of the periodical, the Baltimore Weekly
Magazine118 edited by John B. Colvin, who had received
printing training in the office of the Federal Gazette119
and who was later to become Pechin's associate in the
publication of the Baltimore American.120 Colvin pro-
posed to bring Baltimore into line with northern towns
which had well developed literary magazines; he hoped
