(1) The advertisement for the above title proves
conclusively that a publication, A Divine call,
appeared in 1794.
(2) Although Frederick and Samuel Green consistent-
ly advertised their publications in their Mary-
land gazette of Annapolis, no advertisement for
i Divine call was inserted during 1790,
(3) Evans does not list A Divine call under 1790.
(4) Although there is a difference in title between
Wheeler 547 and Evans 26897, Evans obviously ob-
tained his title from the advertisement in the
Maryland gazette, and the advertisement may easily
be a description of the contents rather than an
exact quotation of the title.
(5) The Now York Public library's card for their
copy of Wheeler 547, in the Union catalog at the
Library of Congress carries the questioned date
"[1795?]"; the New York Public library later
changed their date to 1790 to be consistent with
the Huntington library (latter dated April 26,
1942).
(6) There is no internal evidence to support either
date.
(7) It seems somewhat strange that three copies of
the unadvertised Wheeler 547 are extant; but no
copies of the later Evans 26897, which was certain-
ly published, can be located.
However, in a letter dated May H, 1942, the
Huntington library states that the date 1790 was
pencilled on their copy by Wilberforce Eames, and
his bibliographical information was highly accurate.
Therefore, since such bibliographers as Eanes,
Rosenbach, Waters and Wheeler (who all obtained
their information from Huntington, as did the otter
libraries, MdHi and NN, which possess the book)
have affixed the date 1790 to those copies which
have been located, it may be that Evans 26897 is
another edition, or perhaps another publication.
Evans 26897; Rosenbach (American Jewish bibliog-
raphy) 91.
No copy located.
