The public are respectfully informed that the
partnership of Gerrish and Saunders is dissolved,
and, that, in future, this paper will be conduct-
ed by the subscriber, with the greatest care and
attention. He returns thanks for past favors,
and hopes that his conduct may ever be such as
to entitle him to their future encouragement, and
flatters himself, from his knowledge and experi-
ence in business to prove deserving of the patron-
age of a generous public.2
George Gerrishfs moves after the dissolution of
the partnership are uncertain. He may have been em-
ployed in Philadelphia or Baltimore in the printing
tusiness. On October 14, 1796, he was established in
Reading, Pennsylvania, under the firm name of J.
Schneider and G. Gerrish, publishing the weekly news-
paper, the Impartial Reading Herald, and later a German
newspaper, Der Unpartheyische Reading Adler. which be-
gan publication on January 3, 1797.3 The publication
of the Adler, in the imprint of which Gerrish Teuton-
ized his name to Gcorg Gerrisch, leads to the con-
clusion that a working knowledge of German was among
this printer's qualifications" for pursuing his trade.
In spite of the pressure of the work of conducting
two newspapers, Gerrish managed to have time to journey
down into Maryland, and especially Harford County, for
his name next appeared in an advertisement:
