Church, under supervision of the Synod of that church.18

His German newspaper, Die Westliche Correspondent,
continued until 1830.19 In January 1831 an unsuccess-
ful attempt was made to revive it. At the solicita-
tion of General Samuel Ringgold, he published for a
short time an English newspaper, to advance the cause
of the Republican party, the Sentinel of Liberty.
The date of publication is not certain; it was prob-
ably after 1800. However, the Maryland Herald, pub-
lished by Thomas Grieves, became the organ of that
party, and the Sentinel of Liberty was discontinued.20

Gruber was the father of six known children, all
girls,21 a number of his descendants are still living
in Maryland and other states.22 In 1811, Daniel May,
who had married Gruber's daughter Rebecca, joined his
father-in-law as a partner in the printing business;23
it is not certain just when this partnership was dis-
continued; but in 1840 May was editor of the Republi-
