In 1796, Gruber announced the publication of
Der Neue Nord-Americanische Stadt und Land Calender,12
the almanac which was to make him famous and which
was destined to last well over one hundred vears.
Little by little it was to take on the characteristics
by which it is known today. The multiplication table,
in pyramid form, was placed on the back cover of the
almanac after a few years 5 it is sometimes said to
have been invented by Gruber,13 but this seems doubt-
ful since it appears in exactly the same form on other
early nineteenth century almanacs* In 1836 the al-
manac appeared with a set of woodcuts depicting activ-
