land to live, possibly to be near his daughter, the
wife of John M, Buchanan of that city (his wife had
died in 1822). Thomas Grieves died there in 1840.
His obituary states that

Por more than thirty years he was the editor and
proprietor of the Maryland Herald, published in
Hagerstown; and although there is no situation
in which a man can be placed, so well calculated
to create enemies, yet it is a sweet consolation
to his friends to know that he died at peace
with the world.74

His partner, the younger Stewart Herbert, a
popular and generous man, did not continue in the news
paper business after the suspension of the Herald,
but remained in Hagerstown where he occupied several
local public offices. He was one of the most promi-
nent and influential men of the county up to the time
of his death in 1853.76

74 Herald of freedom, July 15, 1840.

75 Scharf, J.T. op. cit. v. 2, p. 1143-1144.
