First, there is the matter of the almanac.

Gruber putlished his first Neue Hord-Amerieanise he
stadt und Land Calender in 1796.64 The next year,
Grieves, possibly to compete with this highly suc-
cessful publication, advertised the Maryland and
Virginia Almanac for the year 1798.65 Perhaps
the English almanac was never issued afterwards; at

will soon celebrate its sesquicentennial.

Lutherisches A. B. C, und Namen Euchlein; 66 1300,
Grieves followed with the Modern Primer.67 In 1799,
also, both printers issued texts of the United States

Constitution, Grieves in English and Gruber in Ger-

Gruber1s German newspaper, Die Westliche Corres-
pondenz. for the period to 1800 are extant today,

conclusion; but from these few examples it seems
probable that the English and German printers vied in
giving the different sections of population similar
Publications.
